	email		The email address of the contributor.
	postal		The postal address of the contributor.
	phone		The telephone number of the contributor. This should be in the world standard format of Area Code - Local Number. For example, (707) 876-9876 or 707-876-9876.
	fax		The fax number of the contributor. This should be in the world standard format of Area Code - Local Number. For example, (707) 876-9876 or 707-876-9876.
	affiliation		The institution where the contributor is based.
	homePage	URL	The URL of the contributor’s homepage on the WWW.
	role		Brief, free-text statement of the role of the contributor (e.g., “illustrator,” “photographer,” etc.).
Coverage			The spatial and/or temporal characteristics of the resource. Formal specification of COVERAGE is currently under development. Users and developers should understand that use of this element is currently considered to be experimental.
	spatial	None/Varies	The element value describes in free text some sort of spatial information relevant to the entity’s topic.
	temporal	None/Varies	The element value describes in free-test some sort of temporal information relevant to the entity's topic.
Creator			The person or organization primarily responsible for creating the intellectual content of the resource. For example, authors in the case of written documents, artists, photographers, or illustrators in the case of visual resources.
	namePersonal		The name of the creator when a creator is an individual.
	nameCorporate		The name of the creator when the contributor is a corporation, organization, or association.
	email		The email address of the creator.
	postal		The postal address of the creator.
	phone		The telephone number of the creator. This should be in the world standard format of Area Code - Local Number. For example, (707) 876-9876 or 707-876-9876.
	fax		The fax number of the creator. This should be in the world standard format of Area Code - Local Number. For example, (707) 876-9876 or 707-876-9876.
	affiliation		The institution where the creator is based.
	homePage	URL	The URL of the creator’s homepage on the WWW.
	role		Brief, free-text statement of the role of the creator (e.g., “author,” “photographer,” etc.).
Date		ISO8601	The date the resource was made available in its present form. Recommended best practice is an 8 digit number in the form YYYY-MM-DD as defined in http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-datetime, a profile of ISO 8601. In this scheme, the date element 1994-11-05 corresponds to November 5, 1994. Many other schema are possible, but if used, they should be identified in an unambiguous manner.
	type	Varies/GEM	The type of date selected from a controlled vocabulary; e.g., “recordCreated,” “creation,” “placedOnline,” “validFrom,” “validTo,” etc. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary of resource types.
Description			A textual description of the resource.
Format			The data format of the resource, used to identify the software and possibly hardware that might be needed to display or operate the resource. For the sake of interoperability, FORMAT should be selected from an enumerated list that is under development in the workshop series at the time of publication of this document.
	contentType	IMT	The file format (Internet Mime Type) of the resource being described.
	platform		Computing platform of the content.
	size		The size of the content file in bytes.
Identifier			String or number used to uniquely identify the resource. Examples for networked resources include URLs and URNs (when implemented). Other globally-unique identifiers,such as International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) or other formal names would also be candidates for this element in the case of off-line resources.
	location	Varies	Any identifier that serves to locate the resource; or, a mechanism that resolves to a location where the resource may be found (e.g., a URL or a Dewey classification number denoting the location of a physical item on a shelf).
	publicID	Varies	Any publicly recognized designation that serves to uniquely identify the resource (e.g., ISBN, ISSN, etc.).
	SID	GEM	A unique identifier assigned by the GEM Consortium to a collection of resources in The Gateway.
	SDN	Varies	A Consortium member’s unique identifier for a specific resource in the Consortium member’s collection.
Language			Language(s) of the intellectual content of the resource. Where practical, the content of this field should coincide with RFC 1766.
	role	GEM	The role of the language designation selected from a controlled vocabulary; e.g., “Content” (language of the content of the resource), or “User” (language of the intended users).
	code	Z39.53	The code value from the scheme representing the name of a written language.
	text	Z39.53	The name of the written language spelled out in full.
Publisher			The entity responsible for making the resource available in its present form, such as a publishing house, a university department, or a corporate entity.
	nameCorporate		The corporate name of the online provider/publisher of the resource.
	role	GEM	The role designation (either “onlineProvider” or “publisher”).
	email		The email address of the online provider/publisher of the resource.
	postal		The postal address of the online provider/publisher of the resource.
	phone		The telephone number of the online provider/publisher of the resource. This should be in the world standard format of Area Code-Local Number. For example, (737) 765-9876 or 707-765-9876.
	contact		The name of the contact person at the online provider/publisher of the resource.
	homePage	URL	The URL of the publisher’s homepage on the WWW.
Relation			The relationship of this resource to other resources. The intent of this element is to provide a means to express relationships among resources that have formal relationships to others, but exist as discrete resources themselves. For example, images in a document, chapters in a book, or items in a collection. Formal specification of RELATION is currently under development. Users and developers should understand that use of this element is currently considered to be experimental.
	kind	Varies/GEM	A machine-readable uni-term description of the kind of relationship the related resource has to the resource being cataloged (drawn from a GEM-registered controlled vocabulary (e.g., the relationship “isStandardsMappingOf” from GEM’s registered vocabulary)). GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary of relationships.
	description		A simple, short textual description of the relationship including, where possible, the context of the relationship (e.g., “Standards mapping agency: MCREL”). The description may be used by an implementation as a human-readable hypertext link to the related resource.
	location	Varies	A location or a method that resolves to the location of the resource being pointed to (e.g., a URL, DDC or LCC number).
	publicID	Varies	Any publicly recognized designation that serves to uniquely identify the related resource (e.g., ISBN, ISSN, etc.)
Rights			A link to a copyright notice, to a rights-management statement, or to a service that would provide information about terms of access to the resource. Formal specification of RIGHTS is currently under development. Users and developers should understand that use of this element is currently considered to be experimental
	location	Varies	A location or a value that resolves to the location of some statement regarding intellectual property or other use restrictions placed on the resource (e.g., a URL).
	agent		The name of the agent of the owner(s) of rights in the resource.
	use		Statement of any intellectual property rights and/or use restrictions.
	priceCode	Varies	A code designating the fee status of the resource (e.g., free, fee-based).
Source			A string or number used to uniquely identify the work from which this resource was derived, if applicable. For example, a PDF version of a novel might have a SOURCE element containing an ISBN number for the physical book from which the PDF version was derived. GATEWAY PROFILE NOTE: Not allowed (At this time, GEM does not use the SOURCE element. Instead, information regarding a resource from which the item being described was derived should be recorded using the RELATION element selecting "isSourceOf" KIND from the controlled vocabulary.)
	description		A brief textual description of the resource being described.
	version		The version number of the resource being described expressed as an integer or decimal value. Default version is “1”.
	location	Varies	A location or a method that resolves to the location of the source (e.g., a URL or a Dewey Classification number denoting the location of a physical item on a shelf).
	publicID	Varies	Any publicly recognized designation that serves to uniquely identify the related resource (e.g., ISBN, ISSN, FPI, SICI, etc.)
Subject			The topic of the resource. Typically, subject will be expressed as keywords or phrases that describe the subject or content of the resource. The use of controlled vocabularies and formal classification schemas is encouraged.
	subjectPath	Varies/GEM	Entry of a term or phrase from a controlled vocabulary or thesaurus. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	sequence		Sequence of the term or phrase in the subjectPath (where applicable).
	keyword		Entry of a key terms or phrases drawn from the text of the resource (uncontrolled).
Title			The title of the work as provided by the author, publisher, or by the cataloger in the absence of an author/publisher-provided title.
Type		Varies	The category of the resource, such as home page, novel, poem, working paper, technical report, essay, dictionary. For the sake of interoperability, TYPE should be selected from an enumerated list that is under development in the workshop series at the time of publication of this document. Examples include a lesson plan or unit.

	application		The application used to catalog the resource (e.g., GEMCat).
	version		The version number of the application that cataloged the resource e.g., 3.0).
Duration			The recommended time or number of sessions needed to do the activity/lesson as stated in the entity being described.
Resources			A brief free-text listing of materials essential to the successful use of the entity by the teacher as stated in the entity being described.
Level			Grade, grade span, educational level, or age of the entity’s audience.
	grade	Varies/GEM	Where the resource targets a specific grade or grade range. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a US-centric “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	level	Varies/GEM	Where the resource targets an educational level as opposed to a specific grade. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a US-centric “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	age	[Integer/Integer Range]	Where the resource targets a specifice age or age range.
Pedagogy			Denotes the student instructional groupings, teaching methods, assessment methods, and learning prerequisites of a resource.
	grouping	Varies/GEM	The designation of the student grouping(s) selected from a GEM-registered controlled vocabulary. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	teachingMethod	Varies/GEM	The designation of the teaching method(s) selected from a GEM-registered controlled vocabulary. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	assessment	Varies/GEM	The designation of the student assessment method(s) selected from a GEM-registered controlled vocabulary. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	prerequisite		The free-text designation of a learning prerequisite.
Quality			The Quality Indicators element is a means for assessing the quality of instructional materials.
	criteria	Varies/GEM	Various criteria drawn from established evaluative schemes upon which the resource is evaluated and rated. GEM NOTE: GEM provides a “best practice” controlled vocabulary.
	rating		The rating assigned a specific criteria.
	category	GEM	The textual rating (poor, fair, average, good, excellent). GEM NOTE: GEM requires that when the QUALITY element is used, a general category must be selected from the GEM vocabulary regardless of any alternative schemes used for CRITERIA.
	authority		The name of the agency/person who did the quality evaluation.
	scale		Brief description of the scale used in evaluation (e.g., 1-5)
	homePage	URL	The URL of any online statement of the evaluating agency's use of the evaluation criteria.
Standards			State and/or national academic standards mapped to the entity being described.
	authority		The name of the agency/person that mapped the standard to the entity.
	correlation		A statement that identifies the degree to which the described materials correlate to the standard. GEM NOTE: Correlation should be expressed in terms of the probability that an end user looking for resources that meet the specific standard would fine this particular resource useful (e.g., “.85”).
	identifier	Varies	If available, a coded representation of the standard as provided by the standard-making body.
	discipline	Varies	The topical area of the standard (e.g., Mathematics, Science, etc.) as provided by the standard-making body.
	level	Varies	The education level identified in the standard (which may or may not be coextensive with the grade or grade/level/age range of the resource being cataloged).
	standardPath	Varies	Official text of an individual taxon in the standardPath.
	sequence		Sequence of an individual taxon in the standardPath.
