Title: DCMI Registry Working Group
Chair: Rachel Heery, lisrmh@ukoln.ac.uk
Chair: Harry Wagner, wagnerh@oclc.org
Status: This working group is currently active.
Established: 1999-12-15
Charter:

The DCMI Registry Working Group aims to establish a metadata registry to support the activity of the DCMI. Exploration of the role of a DCMI registry is becoming a priority task in order to manage Dublin Core elements and qualifiers as they are used and adapted for an increasingly diverse set of applications.

The registry is intended to fulfill various purposes such as

  • To manage DCMI namespace(s)
  • To provide an authoritative source of information regarding DCMI for humans and software
  • To facilitate take up of DCMI
  • To manage change and evolution of the DCMI vocabulary

The WG will identify requirements for a DCMI registry, scope the registry, recommend policy and process and implement a solution. The intention is to have a phased delivery, starting with basic functionality and content.

DCMI Registry Community meeting at DC-2007 in Singapore

At the meeting in Singapore, reports were presented by several groups including Jane Hunter's DART project, The European Library, the NSDL Registry and the IEMSR project. We also reported back from the Open Forum on Metadata Registries, held in New York in summer 2007. This was followed by a discussion that focused on identifying similar design choices made by these independent efforts, and the potential for further joint work in this area. As a result of this discussion, it was decided that a Task Group should be proposed in order to fulfil the following aims:

  • Develop a set of functional requirements common to current registries, based on the experience and findings of current registry implementers and stakeholders. As part of this, investigate the dissemination functionality considered desirable in a registry, and appropriate use cases associated with this functionality;
  • Draft a set of use cases for inter-registry interactions, taking into consideration interoperability concerns (reporting, notification, versioning, etc.) between registries and other applications sharing related goals;
  • Draft a set of functional requirements related to the inter-registry transfer language or languages, including interoperability concerns related to sharing information between registries and with other applications such as vocabulary management applications that share related aims.

The aim is to produce a Phase 1 implementation by end of January 2000.

Production of these deliverables will be an iterative process, there has already been considerable background work within the DCMI community, and a prototype is available at http://eor.dublincore.org

The DCMI working group will act as a focus for activity regarding metadata registries within the DCMI. It will disseminate information about its work to DC-General and the DC-Advisory Committee. The DCMI Registry working group will collaborate with:
