DC-2002: Metadata for e-Communities: Supporting Diversity and Convergence, Florence, Italy, October 13-17, 2002

2002-04-29: The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that DC-2002 will take place October 13-17 in Florence, Italy. As with DC 2001 in Tokyo, we are planning a three track meeting: A workshop track A tutorial track A conference track The conference site will be the Convitto della Calza, an ancient convent of the 14th century, once a hospital for pilgrims, recently and completely restored. It is located in the historical centre of Florence, very close to the Pitti Palace and Ponte Vecchio, near the Porta Romana.

The Conference track will present papers in the following areas:

  • e-Government
  • Search engines and metadata
  • Educational metadata: improving communication
  • Knowledge management
  • Use of DC metadata for commerce and intranets
  • Semantic web: roles of standard cataloguing, indexing, metadata and ontologies
  • Metadata interoperability: tools and protocols
  • Cultural heritage metadata

The Workshop track will feature technical meetings of ongoing working groups of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. The agenda for the workshop track is under development in DCMI Working Groups.

The Tutorial track provides structured learning activities designed to introduce participants to and guide them through selected topics of interest and importance to users, developers, and implementers of Dublin Core metadata. DC-2002 is organized by DCMI, Associazione Italiana Biblioteche, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale Firenze, Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, Istituto Universitario Europeo, Regione Toscana, Università di Firenze

2001-10-22 - 2001-10-26: DC-2001: International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications - Cosponsored by the National Institute for Informatics (NII), the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) and Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST). The workshop will be held in Tokyo, Japan.

For the first time, the workshop will be a three-track conference. There will be a Working Group track to address problems and support evolution of DCMI standards; a Tutorial track to provide formal instruction to Dublin Core newcomers; and a Conference track to provide an opportunity for project demonstrations, peer-reviewed papers, poster sessions, and panel discussions.

2001-09-20, This meeting was an official DCMI-Libraries WG event that was held in conjunction with the International Federation of Library Associations conference. The main topic on the agenda was a discussion of the draft Dublin Core Library Application Profile.


"Managing Information Resources for e-Government" Conference

2001-07-06, The conference "Managing Information Resources for e-Government" was held on June 21-22, 2001 in Brussels, Belgium. The conference was arranged by the DCMI Government Working Group in collaboration with the European Commission and the European Parliament to explore the possibility of developing a framework for the use of metadata across European governments and parliaments. 2001-06-21 - 2001-06-22: Managing Information Resources for e-Government Conference

The DCMI Government Working Group in collaboration with the IDA Programme (Interchange of Data between Administrations) of the European Commission have arranged the conference "Managing Information Resources for e-Government" to be held on June 21-22, 2001 in Brussels, Belgium. The objective of the meeting is to explore the possibility of standardising the use of Metadata across European Governments and Parliaments, and to identify the resources, both technical and non-technical, that would be required to support this activity. 2001-06-20 - 2001-06-22: DCMI Tools Workshop

The DCMI Tools Workshop, to be held on June 20 - 22, 2001 in Osnabrück, Germany, is looking for active developers of metadata applications interested in development of (open source) software that supports (qualified) Dublin Core metadata and application-specific or domain specific extensions to participate. 2000-10-04 - 2000-10-06: Eighth International Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Workshop (DC8) - Co-sponsored by the National Library of Canada, the IFLA UDT program and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. The workshop was held in Ottawa, Canada.

A mission statement for the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative was one of the outcomes of DC-8. Decisions on the workplan for the coming year also include: improvements in management and process for DCMI; development of registry facilities for DCMI metadata; further development of the DC User Guide; further domain-specific metadata activities; development of agent-specific qualifiers and elements and clarification of architectural issues.


2000-10-03: DC-Advisory Committee Meeting at DC-8, Ottawa, Canada

2000-01-21: DC-Education Working Group announces a face-to-face meeting in Australia, 19-20 February 2000. The DC-Education working group will be holding its face-to-face meeting in Melbourne, Australia on the weekend of February 19-20, 2000. From this meeting a draft proposal will emerge for possible education-related qualifiers for the Dublin Core elements and possible additional elements and qualifiers.

The work of DC-7 was to focus on the qualifiers for the 15 Dublin Core metadata elements.

1998-11-02 - 1998-11-04: Sixth Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC-6) - Co-sponsored by the Library of Congress and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. with support from the National Science Foundation and the Coalition for Network Information. The workshop was held in Washington D.C., USA.

The focus of DC-6 was to identify unresolved issues and assign them to formal working groups for resolution. The following is a summary of the major areas that emerged from discussions just before and during the workshop: Formalization of a process for the Dublin Core; Standardization; HTML encoding; Qualification Mechanisms; RDF role and Relationships to other metadata models.

1997-10-06 - 1997-10-08: Fifth Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC-5) - Co-sponsored by the National Library of Finland, OCLC Online Computer Library Center and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). The workshop was held in Helsinki, Finland.

The workshop focused on finalizing the 15 unqualified elements of the Dublin Core. Implementation projects from around the world and from a number of different disciplines were also showcased.

1997-03-03 - 1997-03-05: Fourth Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC-4) - Co-sponsored by the National Library of Australia, the Distributed Systems Technology Centre (DSTC) and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. The workshop was held in Canberra, Australia.

The central issues for discussion at DC-4 were element structure; extensibility issues and element refinement. The workshop also resulted in progress on the metadata model that underlies the Dublin Core and clarified the qualifiers necesary to implement the model. An outline of the implementation details that need to be clarified to support wider deployment was also developed.


1996-09-24 - 1996-09-25: Third Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC3) "Image Description on the Internet" - Co-sponsored by the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. The workshop was held in Dublin, Ohio, USA.

This workshop reached concensus, supporting the notion that the Dublin Core, within the context of the Warwick Framework affords a foundation for the development of a simple resource description model to support network-based discovery of images.


1996-04-01 - 1996-04-03: Second Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC2) - Co-sponsored by the United Kingdom Office for Library & Information Networking and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. with the support of the Joint Information Systems Committee, National Center for Supercomputer Applications, DLib and ERCIM. The workshop was held in Warwick, U.K.

There was concensus that embedding metadata in HTML will provide an encouraging impetus to rapid deployment of richer resource description techniques on the Web along the lines developed in the workshop.


1995-03-01 - 1995-03-03: First Dublin Core Metadata Workshop (DC1) - Co-sponsored by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. The workshop was held in Dublin, Ohio, USA.

The goals of the workshop included: fostering a common understanding of the needs, strengths, shortcomings and solutions of the stakeholders and reaching consensus on a core set of metadata elements to describe networked resources.
