dcterms:abstract A collection of around 7,300 archival documents and books relating to the history of shorthand, writing systems, orthography and spelling reform. This is mainly the private collection of Sir isaac Pitman, the inventor of Pitman's shortahnd, and his grandson, Sir (Isaac) James Pitman. A significant proportion of the collection is in shorthand, including first drafts and early examples of Pitman's shorthand system. The collection includes some materials in languages other than English. It also has the 400+ entries submitted in the New British Alphabet Competition.
