Updates to DCMI Terms and RDF schemas

2006-12-18, The DCMI Usage Board has completed an editorial revision of terms in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, bringing definitions and usage comments into line with the DCMI Abstract Model. Documentation is available in revised Web pages, RDF schemas, and in a response to comments received during the Public Comment period.

Manzanillo Resolution 2006

2006-10-30, Participants from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries met in a special session during DC-2006, and adopted a resolution to promote the use of metadata in the Ibero-american community and strengthen the involvement of and co-operation among implementers of Dublin Core metadata in that community.

Follow-up for Public Comment on revisions to Dublin Core elements

2006-09-25, Public Comment was held from 28 August to 25 September 2006 on editorial revisions to labels, definitions and comments of terms in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. Comments received will be discussed at the DCMI Usage Board meeting in Manzanillo, Mexico, on 30 September 2006, and the results will be finalized over the coming weeks.

Revised DCMI Type Vocabulary published

2006-08-28, On the basis of input received from a Public Comment period held earlier this year, the DCMI Usage Board has finalized a set of revisions to the DCMI Type Vocabulary. The RDF schema for the DCMI Type Vocabulary and the DCMI Registry have been updated accordingly.

Public Comment for revisions to Dublin Core Metadata Element Set

2006-08-28, The DCMI Usage Board has announced a Public Comment period for editorial revisions to labels, definitions and comments of terms in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. The proposed revisions clarify intended meanings and update the wording of definitions and comments in accordance with the DCMI Abstract Model. Comments can be submitted from 28 August through 25 September 2006 by posting to the DC-GENERAL mailing list. Comments received will be discussed at the Usage Board meeting in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico, on 30 September 2006.

Follow-up for Public Comment on DC-XML and DC-RDF

2006-07-05, Public Comment was held from 30 May through 27 June 2006 on revised guidelines for expressing Dublin Core metadata in XML and in RDF. A report on issues raised will serve as the basis for further updates of the RDF expression.

Public Comment on "Expressing Dublin Core metadata using RDF"

2006-05-30, Mikael Nilsson has finalized a Working Draft on expressing Dublin Core metadata using the Resource Description Framework. Public Comment will be held from 30 May through 27 June. Comments of a technical nature should be sent to the dc-architecture mailing list, where a summary of modeling issues has been posted. An additional document has been prepared about differences between the new draft and legacy specifications.

Public Comment on "Expressing Dublin Core metadata using XML"

2006-05-30, Pete Johnston and Andy Powell have finalized a Working Draft on expressing Dublin Core metadata using XML. Public Comment will be held from 30 May through 27 June. Comments of a technical nature should be sent to the dc-architecture mailing list; a summary of technical issues has been posted there, with pointers to release notes and example schemas.

Revised recommendations for DCMI DCSV, DCMI Period, DCMI Point and DCMI Box published

2006-04-10, Following a public comment period, revised specifications for DCMI DCSV, DCMI Period, DCMI Point, and DCMI Box have superseded older versions as DCMI Recommendations.

Documentation contracts awarded

2006-03-13, In order to improve the availability of basic user documentation, the DCMI Directorate has awarded contracts to Andy Powell (Eduserv Foundation, UK) and Pete Johnston (UKOLN, University of Bath, UK) for a revision of the existing guidelines for implementing Dublin Core in XML; to Mikael Nilsson (Knowmania HB, Sweden) for a revision of the guidelines for expressing Dublin Core in RDF; and to the information consultant Barbara Gorson for a packet of basic introductory materials on Dublin Core. Revised versions of the encoding guidelines for XML and RDF are expected to be posted for public comment in the next months.

Next steps for revision of the DCMI Type Vocabulary

2006-03-13, Public comment was held from 8 December 2005 to 31 January 2006 on a set of proposed editorial changes to terms in the DCMI Type Vocabulary. The comments received during this period are reported in a tabular summary and will be discussed at a meeting of the DCMI Usage Board on 29-30 April 2006.

Next steps for revisions of DCMI DCSV, DCMI Period, DCMI Point and DCMI Box

2006-03-13, The public comment period on revisions to the legacy DCSV specifications has resulted in suggestions for minor editorial revisions. When finalized, these documents will replace the older legacy specifications as DCMI Recommendations.

Public Comment for DCMI DCSV, DCMI Period, DCMI Point and DCMI Box

2006-02-13, The Usage Board has updated the specifications for DCMI DCSV, DCMI Period, DCMI Point, and DCMI Box to bring their language in line with the DCMI Abstract Model. 2006-01-16, The XML schemas published on the XML Schemas page have been updated to include support for new terms recently approved by the Usage Board.

Public Comment on changes to the DCMI Type Vocabulary

2005-12-08, The DCMI Usage Board has proposed some minor editorial changes to terms in the DCMI Type Vocabulary. The changes will be available for Public Comment until 31 January 2006.

Role properties for Dublin-Core-based metadata

2005-12-08, The DCMI Usage Board, together with the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress, is pleased to announce the availability of a sub-set of MARC Relator terms as role properties which refine the "agent" elements of Dublin Core (Creator, Contributor, and Publisher). The use of MARC Relator terms will allow designers of Dublin-Core-based metadata applications to distinguish between different types of Contributor, such as Illustrator or Translator (see guidelines). DC-2005 papers now online

2005-11-07, The papers from the DC-2005 conference, held from 12-15 September 2005 in Leganés (Madrid) are now online in the Dublin Core Conference Paper Repository. The Repository already contained the papers from the DC-2002 (Florence), DC-2003 (Seattle) and DC-2004 (Shanghai) conferences. Access is available through the link to “Conference Papers” in the left-hand navigation bar on the DCMI Home page.

DCMI Conference Papers hosted by Simon Fraser University

2005-09-06, Joseph T. Tennis, Assistant Professor at The University of British Columbia, along with Mark Jordan and Brian Owen of Simon Fraser University's WAC Bennett Library and Brad Allen at Siderean Software, have established the Dublin Core Conference Paper Repository. The repository provides access to the papers and posters delivered at DCMI Conferences from 2002 through 2004. Addition of the papers of DC-2005 is expected very soon. Built on open source software (MySQL, Linux, and Apache Tomcat) and displayed through Siderean Software's Seamark faceted navigation, this Repository offers the metadata community a focused and easy access to these papers. Access is available through the link to “Conference Papers” in the left-hand navigation bar on the DCMI Home page.

DCMI Abstract Model available for Public Comment

2005-02-07, The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that the DCMI Abstract Model is now available for public comment as a Proposed Recommendation. We are inviting comments on this important document until 5 March 2005. Comments should be sent to the DC-General mailing list with subject "Public Comment DCMI Abstract Model". Public comment for revisions of four Recommendations

2005-07-25, At their next meeting, in Madrid on 9-10 September 2005, the DCMI Usage Board will review the revised versions of four existing DCMI recommendations: Dublin Core Structured Values, the DCMI Box Encoding Scheme, the DCMI Period Encoding Scheme, and the DCMI Point Encoding Scheme.

The main changes are:

  • some examples have been removed
  • XML encodings given in the text have been removed
  • wordings have been modified to ensure that the documents conform to the DCMI Abstract Model (notably, the terms 'label' and 'value', used to describe the parts of the components of structured values, were replaced with new terms 'componentLabel' and 'componentValue' respectively)
  • other minor changes of wording and layout have been applied.

Public comment is open until 22 August 2005. Comments should be sent to the DC-General mailing list with the title of the document in the subject. See also the Public Comment page.

New terms published by the Usage Board

2005-06-13, The DCMI Usage Board is pleased to announce the creation of several new terms -- an encoding scheme for National Library of Medicine Classification; Instructional Method; and three elements related to the method, policy, and periodicity of collection accrual (see the Usage Board decisions page). The Usage Board will meet next on 9-10 September 2005, before DC-2005 in Madrid. Please contact Thomas Baker for further information.

New version of Dublin Core user guide available

2005-06-13, A new version of Using Dublin Core, the official user guide to Dublin Core metadata, is now available. The updated version includes guidance for new terms approved by the Usage Board, as well as new sections on the DCMI Abstract Model and references to newly recommended documentation available for implementers.

Citation guidelines published as DCMI Recommendation

Document explaining element refinement published as DCMI Recommended Resource

2005-06-13, The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that after the Public Comment period that ended in May 2005, the document Element Refinement in Dublin Core Metadata that describes the concept and appropriate use of element refinement as used in Dublin Core metadata, is now published as a DCMI Recommended Resource.

DCMI Abstract Model published as DCMI Recommendation

2005-03-07, The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that after the Public Comment period that took place in February 2005, the DCMI Abstract Model is now published as a DCMI Recommendation. The document is primarily aimed at the developers of software applications that support Dublin Core metadata, people involved in developing new syntax encoding guidelines for Dublin Core metadata and those people developing metadata application profiles based on the Dublin Core.

Several documents updated on the DCMI Web site

2004-12-20, The DCMI Metadata Terms and the Reference description of the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, Version 1.1 have been republished with some minor editorial changes, repairing two links to the specifications of ISO3166 and MIME. Several Working Group Web pages have been updated with reports of meetings at DC-2004 and new workplans for next year.

DC-2004 papers and tutorials available on-line

2004-11-12, The papers from the DC-2004 conference in Shanghai can be accessed by clicking on the titles of the papers on the DC-2004 Conference Program Web page, as well as at http://purl.org/metadataresearch /search.jsp. Usage Board announces new DCMI term "Provenance"

2004-09-20, The Usage Board has announced the approval of a new term: "Provenance". The full text of the decision can be found from the Usage Board Decisions Web page. The terms have been added to DCMI Metadata Terms and related documents, as well as to the RDF schema provided by DCMI and to the DCMI Registry.

Public comment period for proposals to the Usage Board

2004-08-30, In preparation for its next meeting on 9 and 10 October 2004 in Shanghai, China, the DCMI Usage Board is inviting comments on several proposals. There are six proposals from the DCMI Collection Description Working Group, one from the DCMI Education Working Group and one from the DCMI Accessibility Working Group. Guidelines for implementing Dublin Core in XML become DCMI Recommendation and new XML schemas published

2003-04-02, The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that the Guidelines for implementing Dublin Core in XML is now a DCMI Recommendation. This document considers both simple (unqualified) DC and qualified DC applications. At the same time, a new set of XML schemas is published. These support the encoding of Qualified Dublin Core metadata records, including the use of element refinements and encoding schemes, and follow the conventions described in Guidelines for expressing Dublin Core in XML.
