DCMI Metadata Terms: A complete historical record

Title: DCMI Metadata Terms: A complete historical record
Creator: DCMI Usage Board
Identifier: http://dublincore.org/usage/terms/history/2006/12/18/
Date Issued: 2006-12-18
Latest Version: http://dublincore.org/usage/terms/history/

Translations: http://dublincore.org/resources/translations/
Document Status: This is a DCMI Recommendation.
Description: This document is a consolidated, historically complete, and updated representation of all Elements, Element Refinements, Encoding Schemes, and Vocabulary Terms in DCMI-maintained namespaces in all of their historical versions both current and superseded. While this document is useful for tracking changes in the status and attributes of terms over time, most users will need just "the latest" information, which is held in the document "DCMI Metadata Terms" at http://dublincore.org/usage/documents/dcmi-terms/.

Introduction

This document is an authoritative specification of all metadata terms maintained by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative in all of their historical versions.

Most users will not need the historical detail presented here and should instead consult the document "DCMI Metadata Terms", which presents only the most current information on terms [TERMS]. Links to other relevant documentation may be found on the "Overview of Documentation for DCMI Metadata Terms" [OVERVIEW].

In addition to the attributes used to describe terms in the document "DCMI Metadata Terms" [TERMS], this document includes additional information related to the versioning history of individual terms:

Namespace: The URI of the namespace within which the term is defined.
Date modified: Date on which a term declaration was subsequently modified.
Decision: A link to the Usage Board decision describing the creation or modification of a term declaration.
Version: This description of the term.
Replaces: The immediately precedent description of the term.
Is Replaced By: The immediately successive description of the term.

Errata note, December 2006: When DCMES 1.1 was created, the DCMI Recommendation for DCMES 1.1 superseded the DCMI Recommendation for DCMES 1.0. When this historical record of all term descriptions was compiled, the assertion of a relationship between these two documents was translated into assertions between terms declared in those documents -- i.e., that Rights-002, a description of http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/rights as of 1999-07-02, "replaces" Rights-001, a description of http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.0/rights as of 1998-08-06. However, Rights-002 and Rights-001 describe two different terms, and Rights-001 remains the last "unreplaced" description of http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.0/. The erroneous and misleading assertions to the effect that descriptions of /1.1/ terms "replace" descriptions of /1.0/ terms therefore have been removed. The spelling of "organisation" was changed to "organization" on 2006-12-21.
