Announcing OpenWEMI

In 1998, the International Federation of Library Associations introduced a new model for library catalog data, focusing on the bibliographic relationships within metadata. This model, known as the Library Reference Model (LRM), includes four main elements: Work, Expression, Manifestation, and Item (WEMI), each representing different aspects of created resources. To support the broader use of these WEMI concepts, OpenWEMI was developed by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, providing a general vocabulary with minimal constraints. OpenWEMI’s RDF vocabulary includes classes and properties designed to facilitate the creation of context-specific metadata vocabularies, allowing for the flexible integration of WEMI concepts in diverse applications.

Dublin Core Data Institute - October 19, Toronto

Data is now the cornerstone of advanced research across various fields, including the humanities and social sciences. These disciplines increasingly rely on data, generating new information as evidence or demonstrating innovative practices. To combat research fraud and promote broader dissemination, publication venues now require data sharing. Recognizing the importance of open data environments, it’s crucial to provide scholars with easy access. Despite growing interest, efforts in data aggregation and dissemination remain inconsistent. The Dublin Core Data Institute (DCDI) aims to unite data scientists and scholars, establishing a federated data service to address key challenges and develop comprehensive open data resources for humanities and social science research.

NKOS Workshop on AI and KOS at DCMI-2024 in Toronto

An NKOS Workshop will be held at DCMI 2024, the twenty-second International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications, October 20-23, Toronto, Canada. The NKOS Workshop is particularly interested in how knowledge organization systems (KOS) are being used or can be used to make automation intelligent. For example, one problem with LLMs is “hallucinations” where the application generates a response to a prompt that is “correct” but not true. How can KOS be integrated with LLMs to guide their responses so that they do not produce “hallucinations”? The workshop will feature demonstrations from projects working in this exciting area.

Themes

The activities of DCMI, its members and its communities are broadly characterised under four themes.

Stewardship: DCMI develops and curates open-standard metadata vocabularies such as the Dublin Core; hosts the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI); and provides good-neighbor support for other related metadata activities.
Community: DCMI's international community of metadata practitioners and experts meet in working groups and at an annual conference to share implementation experience and reports on research and new developments.
Learning: Teachers and experts of metadata technologies from around the world hold tutorials, online meetings, and webinars to discuss and disseminate innovative metadata solutions.
Development: Since pioneering the Application Profile in the 1990s, DCMI continues to develop profiles and related vocabularies spanning practical techniques such as spreadsheets and modern technologies such as data shapes.
