Description of document: | This document is the reference description, version 1.1 of the Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set. This description has been brought in line with the text of the official NISO standard that has been submitted to ISO for international ballot. |
|
The Dublin Core™ metadata element set is a standard for cross-domain information resource description. Here an information resource is defined to be "anything that has identity". This is the definition used in Internet RFC 2396, "Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI): Generic Syntax", by Tim Berners-Lee et al. There are no fundamental restrictions to the types of resources to which Dublin Core™ metadata can be assigned.
Two formally endorsed versions exist of the Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set, version 1.1:
- CEN Workshop Agreement CWA 13874 (March 2000): http://www.cenorm.be/isss/cwa_download_area/cwa13874.pdf
- NISO Standard Z39.85-2001 (September 2001): http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/Z39-85.pdf
There are slight differences between these two official texts. The current document has been brought into line with the NISO standard which was used as the basis for the Draft International Standard balloted by ISO as DIS 15836. During the ISO publication phase, it is expected that this document will be brought into line with the more comprehensive document "DCMI Metadata Terms" ( http://dublincore.org/specifications/dublin-core/dcmi-terms/), which includes the latest and authoritative term declarations for the Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set, Version 1.1.
The most notable difference between the current document and the previous version is a change in the recommended best practice for the Language element. It now recommends RFC 3066 rather than RFC 1766. Editorial changes were made to the text and to the references. The attributes to describe the elements were brought in line with the style of the NISO standard.
